Locanda

From historic home to prestigious holiday farm

Locanda Antiche Macine is a holiday farm located in Montalbano, a small green hamlet in the municipality of Santarcangelo di Romagna that offers quality wines and fresh hill air. Close to Rimini and Cesena, the inn is a magical place with a history dating back to the 1600s.

Originally

In Montalbano, there was an oil mill owned by the Beretti aunt and uncle, Michele and Rosina, a well-to-do farming family. Inherited by their grandmother Orsolina, the mill belonged to the Marconi brothers who were part of the well-known Agricultural Corporation of the Marconi Brothers.

With deep appreciation and gratitude, the Marconi brothers decided to renovate the Locanda Antiche Macine in memory of their youth and, in particular, in memory of their loved ones.

Today

The story continues, and since 2014 his grandson, Marco Semprini, has taken over the entire structure in the name of family tradition.

Some fragments of our Inn's history

It all began in Montalbano where the Beretti aunt and uncle lived: Michele and Rosina. Michele was a small, stocky man with his head sunken into his shoulders and the eternal hat on his head. Every Friday, he went to the Santarcangelo fair or the Savignano market with his biroccino to sell and buy livestock. He owned several farms and needed the cattle to work the land. He was the first person in the area to buy a tractor, as he had no shortage of money: the barn was always full of customers and grandchildren who enjoyed jumping over the mountains of grain.

Aunt Rosina was quite an energetic woman. She descended from a wealthy family with numerous estates and houses. Having no children, she devoted herself to the household and always sought the company of a few children among her relatives. Gioacchino was the first nephew to spend time in their home, and during summer vacations he would move in with his aunt and uncle. According to them, he was a lively boy who would get up to all sorts of mischief, even dangerous pranks. Together with some of Montalbano's friends, at night they amused themselves by coming in through the windows disguised as ghosts with white sheets. Other times, they would place a pumpkin with a candle inside on the windowsill, in the guise of a ghost. Vittorì, as they called him, was the trusted handyman as well as their accomplice. As they grew older, they put on airs of conquest, and no Montalbano girl was saved. There was this teacher Maria, very pretty, who was Joachim's favorite. However, she married a gentleman from Santarcangelo, perhaps because she was much better off than he was.

Aunt Rosina dreamed of a beautiful wedding for Orsolina. She always said he had to be a college graduate and rich, finally, her dream really came true. When Orsolina lived with them, they often went out dressed up, and Aunt sported diamond earrings and gold chains around her neck. During the opera season at the Vittorio Emanuele Theater in Rimini, to make a good impression, they would take a box and arrive in a chauffeur-driven car.

Aunt was a great believer in fortune tellers and often received them in the house, secretly from her husband. In winter, the meetings took place in the barn, and in summer under a large cherry tree far from the house. Aunt Rosina trusted the witch more than the doctor. In fact, the purpose of these meetings was to cure ills for herself and another nephew, Giorgio, who had been their guest for many years. The child was not puny at all, but just very spoiled. He did not want to eat because, during the day, he only stuffed himself with sweets and eggnog. The witch said it was because of people's envy, and then down with all kinds of spells. Blessed oil from no one knows which holy man, croissants to keep on and holy cards coming from everywhere. They would open the pillow to see if there was any sign of 'evil' in the wool. Meanwhile, time passed and, today, only the memories remain that are truly beautiful.
